What is an interactive reading app?
An interactive reading app is software that responds to the book you are reading instead of only showing it or logging it. In 2026 the term mostly means AI reading companions: apps that recap the story so far, answer questions about it or let you chat with its characters, ideally without revealing anything past your place. "Interactive books" also has an older meaning, children's books with flaps, textures and sounds, which has its own page.
What makes a reading app interactive?
Three things separate an interactive reading app from an ebook reader or a reading tracker.
- It knows where you are. It finds your place from a photo of the page, a page number you type, your position in an ebook, the last phrase you heard in an audiobook, or the chapter you tap.
- It answers back. It gives you a recap, answers questions, lets you chat with characters, or puts you in a discussion with other readers at the same point.
- It respects your place. A good one only uses the part of the story you have reached. That is what readers mean by spoiler-free.
Trackers such as Goodreads or The StoryGraph record what you read. They do not talk with you about the book, so they are outside this journal's scope.
What kinds of interactive reading apps are there?
There are four kinds today. Products are named alphabetically within each.
- Chapter-locked social apps. Fable and Thus Far let you talk about a book with other readers, with discussion sorted by chapter so you only see posts up to where you are. Thus Far also adds AI "Book Buddies" that are labelled and can be switched off.
- General chatbots. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can discuss many well-known books, but they do not know your page, and their makers say they can give wrong answers.
- In-book store features. Kindle's Story So Far and Ask this Book are built into supported Kindle ebooks you bought or borrowed, for readers in the US.
- Page-locked companions for your own copy. Magic Bookmark works alongside a print book, ebook or audiobook you already have. You show it your page, and its recap, cast list, answers and character chat stop there. It covers supported titles only, on iPhone.
The comparison table puts all of them side by side, fact by fact.
How do they avoid spoilers?
The short version: the strict ones limit what the AI is allowed to use, not just what it is asked to say. A page lock cuts the book off at your page before anything is written. A chapter lock does the same at the end of a chapter. A general chatbot has no lock at all, only your instruction, which it may or may not follow. Our explainer on how page-locked recaps work draws the whole pipeline.
Which one fits the way you read?
- You read Kindle ebooks in the US. Story So Far and Ask this Book come with supported Kindle books at no separate charge.
- You read print books or listen to audiobooks. Kindle's features do not reach them. Magic Bookmark is built for this case, for the titles it supports, on iPhone. Thus Far tracks paper, ebook and audio by chapter.
- You want people, not AI. Fable's club chapter rooms and Thus Far's chapter feeds are built around other readers.
- Your book is not supported anywhere. A general chatbot can still help if you prompt it carefully and check what it says.
What are the open questions?
- Accuracy. AI recaps and answers can be wrong even when they are locked to your page. Our guide to checking an AI recap shows how to catch mistakes.
- Privacy. Every app here collects some data, and some list data used to track you. See the privacy labels, side by side.
- Authors' rights. The Authors Guild objects to Kindle's Ask this Book being added without permission or payment. Read both sides in Are AI reading companions fair to authors?
- Age. Most of these apps are rated 13+ or 18+ on the App Store. See AI character chat and teen readers.

Questions
- Q1
Is an interactive reading app the same as an ebook reader?
No. An ebook reader shows you the text. An interactive reading app responds to the book: it recaps, answers questions or lets you discuss it. Some ebook readers now include interactive features, such as Kindle's Story So Far.
- Q2
Do interactive reading apps work with paper books?
Some do. Magic Bookmark finds your page from a photo or a page number you type, and Thus Far saves your chapter from a photo, a barcode scan or a tap. Kindle's features only work inside Kindle ebooks.
- Q3
Are AI reading companions free?
Some are. Kindle's features come with supported Kindle books, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have free plans. Fable and Thus Far are free with optional paid plans. Magic Bookmark's App Store listing says your first credit is free, then each book uses one Bookmark Credit, from $4.99 for one down to $1.40 each in a pack of 50.
- Q4
Can an AI reading companion spoil the book?
It can. Page-locked tools are designed to stop at your place, but AI output can still be wrong. Ask this Book also lets you choose to ask about the whole book, and general chatbots have no page lock at all.
- Q5
What is the difference between interactive reading and interactive books?
Interactive reading, in this journal's sense, means software that talks with you about a book you are reading. Interactive books usually means children's books with flaps, textures or sounds, or choose-your-path gamebooks. See our page on interactive books for kids.
